Die Cherokee-Rose (Rosa laevigata) ist eine Rosenart, die zu den Wildrosen gerechnet wird. Ihr natürliches Verbreitungsgebiet ist Zentralchina. Sie gelangte allerdings bereits im 17. Jahrhundert nach Nordamerika und hat sich dort als Neophyt ausgebreitet. 1803 beschrieb sie der französische Botaniker Michaux in seiner Flora boreali americana und hielt sie für eine einheimische Pflanze. Dies hat zu ihrem Trivialnamen Cherokee-Rose beigetragen.

Merkmale

Rosa laevigata ist eine weiß blühende Kletterrose, die auf heiße Sommer angewiesen ist. In Nordamerika gedeiht sie vor allem südlich von Georgia gut. Ihre bevorzugten Standorte sind felsige Gebiete. Pflanzen bilden bis zu 10 Meter lange Triebe aus, die mit gebogenen Stacheln bewachsen sind. Die Blätter bestehen aus jeweils drei immergrünen Fiederblättchen. Die weißen Blüten haben einen Durchmesser bis zu 10 Zentimeter und duften angenehm. Die orangeroten Hagebutten sind lang und mit Borsten besetzt.

Systematik

Die Cherokee-Rose ist die einzige Art der Sektion Laevigatae Thory der Untergattung Rosa. Morphologisch steht sie den Sektionen Banksianae und Bracteatae nahe, molekulargenetische Untersuchungen sehen sie jedoch innerhalb der Klade der Sektion Pimpinellifoliae.[1]
