Die Procatopodinae sind eine Unterfamilie der Poeciliidae in der Ordnung der Zahnkärpflinge (Cyprinodontiformes). Es sind schwimmfreudige Schwarmfische. Sie sind in Afrika weit verbreitet und besiedeln dort Bäche, Flüsse und in Westafrika auch die Brackwasserzone. Eine Art (Lamprichthys tanganicanus) kommt endemisch im Tanganjikasee vor. Die südamerikanische Gattung Fluviphylax ist im Amazonasbecken beheimatet. Im deutschen werden die Fische, ebenso wie die Arten der Unterfamilie Aplocheilichthyinae, als Leuchtaugenfische bezeichnet.

Merkmale

Procatopodinae sind schlanke, meist bläulich oder grünlich glänzend gefärbte Fische. Ihre großen Augen reflektieren das Licht. Sie werden zwei bis 15 Zentimeter lang.
