Riverbed wurde 2002 von Jerry Kennelly und Steve McCanne gegründet. Riverbed lieferte sein erstes Produkt, das „Steelhead Appliance“, im Mai 2004 aus. Das „Steelhead Appliance“ ist ein Gerät zur WAN-Optimierung, das eine Kombination aus Datenreduktion, TCP-Beschleunigung und Application Layer-Protokoll-Optimierungen anwendet.
