Der Film ist basiert auf einem Buch von Valerie Tripp. Er war der erste in der Reihe von American Girl-Filmen. Die diesem Film nachfolgenden waren Felicity: An American Girl Adventure, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front und Kit Kittredge: An American Girl.

Handlung

Samantha ist ein Mädchen, das zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts aufwächst. Wenn sie sich bei ihrer Großmutter aufhält, verändert sich ihr Leben drastisch, da sie dort eine ganz andere Kindeserziehung bekommt: Es wird erwartet, dass sie sich wie eine Dame benimmt. Trotz des Neides ihrer Großmutter freundet sich Samantha hier mit Nellie an.
