Close harmony

Close Harmony (eigentlich Arrangement in Close Harmony) ist eine Form des Arrangements in der Popmusik und im Jazz, die als weit verbreitetes musikalisches Ausdrucks- und Stilmittel meistens aus parallelen Terzen besteht, also gleichzeitig gespielten oder gesungenen Noten mit einer Terz Unterschied.

Das Arrangement entsteht aus einem Kompositionsprinzip durch die überwiegende Verwendung von Akkord-Blöcken in enger Lage. Ein typisches Beispiel für Close Harmony im instrumentalen Bereich ist Glenn Millers Moonlight Serenade oder der Einsatz zweier Saxophone bei der Instrumentalmusik von Billy Vaughn. Stimmliche Close Harmony war typisch für die Vokalgruppen Mills Brothers oder Everly Brothers, an denen sich die Beatles oder Simon and Garfunkel orientierten; in Deutschland benutzten die Comedian Harmonists diese Technik.

Close Harmonies sind gegenüber Akkorden in weiter Lage in ihrer klanglichen Wirkung wesentlich „kompakter“, was die Verschmelzung der einzelnen Töne auch bei komplizierteren harmonischen Zusammenhängen begünstigt und diese zudem deutlich toleranter gegenüber Intonationsproblemen macht. Close Harmonys werden auch oft als Begleitung in der Mittellage eingesetzt, was zusätzlich eine Abgrenzung zur Basslinie und gegebenenfalls zu Solopartien schafft.

Close Harmonies sind allerdings musikalisch heikel, sobald verschiedene Instrumenten- oder Stimmlagen beteiligt sind. Besonders in gemischten Vokalchören besteht das Problem des Registerausgleiches zwischen tiefen Frauen- und hohen Männerstimmen; trotz dieser Schwierigkeiten sind die meisten Kompositionen für Jazzchor in Close Harmony geschrieben.

Engere Stimmlagen sind die Cluster, weitere die offenen Stimmlagen.

Aus dem Begriff Close Harmony leitet sich die Bezeichnung Drop 2 und so weiter ab, die besagt, dass aus der engen Lage einzelne (die zweite) Stimmen tiefoktaviert werden.
