Coccolithen sind mikroskopische (maximal 0,01 mm große) scheibenförmige Plättchen aus Kalk, die die Schale von Kalkalgen der Ordnung Coccolithophorida bilden. Das aus Massenablagerungen dieser Schalen hervorgegangene Kreidegestein ist der Namensgeber für den erdgeschichtlichen Zeitabschnitt der Kreide.

Unter Coccolithenschlamm versteht man in der Geologie einen Kalkschlamm, der aus Coccolithen besteht. Diese saßen zu Lebzeiten auf den kugelförmigen gallertigen Körpern planktonischer Flagellaten (Coccolithophoriden). Die weißen Kreidefelsen von Calais, Dover und den Inseln Rügen und Møn bestehen zu einem großen Teil aus fossilen Coccolithen. Tafelkreide bestand früher aus Coccolithen, heute aus Gips.
