Kongorot gehört wie beispielsweise Methylorange und Methylrot zur Gruppe der Azofarbstoffe und wird unter anderem als pH-Indikator verwendet. Kongorot schlägt bei pH 3,0–5,2 von blauviolett nach rotorange um und eignet sich daher als Indikator für die Säure-Base-Titration. Aufgrund dieser Eigenschaft setzte sich der Farbstoff beim Färben von Kleidung nicht durch.

Die Strukturformel zeigt ein undissoziiertes Kongorotmolekül. Jedoch wird Kongorot vorwiegend als Dinatriumsalz vertrieben und eingesetzt, bei dem beide Sulfonsäuregruppen (-SO3H) dissoziiert vorliegen. Die Werte der Tabelle beziehen sich ebenfalls auf das Salz.

Verwendung

In der Biologie wird Kongorot z. B. bei Fütterungsversuchen verwendet. Einzeller werden mit kongorot gefärbten Hefen gefüttert und man kann die Aufnahme der Nahrung und die enzymatische Verdauung beobachten.

In der Pathologie dient Kongorot zur Darstellung von Amyloidablagerungen, die auf eine Amyloidose hinweisen[4].
