Diethylentriaminpentaessigsäure (DTPA) ist eine fünfprotonige Säure und chemisch mit dem EDTA verwandt. Sie wird als chelatisierender Komplexbildner verwendet.

Die ausgezeichneten Komplexbildungseigenschaften besonders bei Metall-Kationen mit großen Ionenradius prädestinieren DTPA für den Einsatz in der Medizin. Beispielsweise wird es in der Chelat-Therapie zum Entgiften nach Unfällen mit Schwermetallen und insbesondere zum Transport von Gadolinium als Kontrastmittel bei MRT-Untersuchungen genutzt.

Gewinnung und Darstellung

DPTA kann durch Umsetzung von Diethylentriamin mit fünf Mol Bromessigsäure gewonnen werden.
