Divine (* 19. Oktober 1945 in Towson, Maryland; † 7. März 1988 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien; bürgerlich: Harris Glenn Milstead) war eine US-amerikanische Drag Queen und Sänger aus dem Bereich Euro Disco.

Milstead wurde als Sohn des Ehepaares Bernard und Diana Francis Milstead geboren. Als er zwölf Jahre alt war, zog seine Familie nach Lutherville, einen Vorort von Baltimore. Dort lernte er bereits in jungen Jahren den Filmemacher John Waters kennen.

Ab 1966 wirkte Divine als Mitglied der Filmcrew Dreamlanders in den Spielfilmen von John Waters mit. Unter dessen Regie entstanden Filme wie Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Polyester und Hairspray.

Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre begann Divine mit dem New Yorker Produzenten Bobby Orlando einige Platten aufzunehmen. Mit einer Mischung aus House- und Technobeats sowie aufputschenden Texten eroberte er die Charts in den USA, Europa und Australien. Divine war damit einer der ersten Künstler, der in den Charts einen Sound etablierte, der später als Dancefloor zu Popularität kommen sollte. Es folgten Auftritte in großen Discotheken in ganz Europa/USA/Asien. Unvergessen ist unter anderem sein Auftritt im Wiener U4.

Divine starb am 7. März 1988 in einem Hotel in Los Angeles im Alter von nur 42 Jahren an einem vergrößerten Herzen und Atemstillstand. Zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes wog er etwa 170 kg.

Kurz vor seinem Tod war Divine für die Rolle von Peggy Bundys Mutter in der Serie Eine schrecklich nette Familie vorgesehen.

In Rosa von Praunheims Film Tally Brown, New York (1971) ist Divine während eines Bühnenauftritts und in einem Interview mit Tally Brown zu sehen.

Diskografie

In den 1980er Jahren veröffentlichte Divine mehrere Tanz-Musik-Aufzeichnungen, die Club-Musik-Hits in den Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada, Europa und Australien waren. Divine´s Datensätze umfasste Synth-schwere Hi-NRG Musik, die meisten davon erstellt, ausgeführt und produziert von Bobby Orlando. In den Vereinigten Staaten wurden Divine´s höchstaufglisteten Songs "Native Love", Platz # 21 auf die Club Play Charts und "Shoot Your Shot", erreichte # 39 unter Club Play Singles. Divine´s frühe UK Veröffentlichungen auf dem Label Design Kommunikation enthalten "Love Reaction" # "Elemente der neuen Ordnung groß übernommen" hit "Blue Monday" #, [64] "Shake It Up" und "Shoot Your Shot". Der Stock, Aitken & Waterman produzierte Song "You think you are A Man" war der göttlichen erfolgreichster UK-Hit, erreichte # 16; Das Lied wurde auch ein Top 10 Hit in Australien, erreichte # 8 #thanks teilweise zu einem beliebten Promotion-Tour in diesem Land, das einen Auftritt in der australischen Popmusik enthalten zeigen Countdown. # unter dem materiellen göttlichen auf dem Proto-Label in Großbritannien veröffentlicht wurde, "I'm So Beautiful" # der Follow-up Single to "You think you are A Man" # "Walk like A Man" und "Twistin' the Night Away". Diese Proto-Label-Tracks waren ihre erste CD-Version auf dem Album "Maid In England" und Zusammenstellung von Tracks aus seiner Proto-Katalog, mit dem Titel The Essential Divine, ist derzeit auf iTunes erhältlich.
