Die Kornrade (Agrostemma githago) gehört zur Familie der Nelkengewächse (Caryophyllaceae). Als Ackerwildkraut, das wegen des modernen Ackerbaus in Mitteleuropa nur noch selten anzutreffen ist, gehört sie zu den gefährdeten Pflanzen. Sie wird auch niederdeutsch Klockenblume und am Rhein Pisspöttken genannt. Durch die Giftigkeit der Samen war die Kornrade lange Zeit ein "gefürchtetes Ackerunkraut". Der Samen enthält Saponine.

Beschreibung

Kornrade (A. githago), Blüte

Es ist eine einjährige krautige Pflanze. Die spindelförmige Hauptwurzel der Pflanze kann bis zu 90 cm lang werden. Der aufrechte, bis zu einen Meter hohe Stängel hat kaum Zweige, manchmal einige Seitentriebe. Die einzelnen purpurvioletten Kronblätter sind etwa zwei Zentimeter groß.

Vorkommen

Heute selten, war sie früher häufig in Getreideäckern, Brachen und Ödland aufzufinden. Als Ackerunkraut ist sie so gut wie verschwunden, da sie auf Verbreitung mit Saatgut angewiesen ist. Durch moderne Saatgutreinigung (Trieur), ist die Verbreitungskette unterbrochen worden. Die Kornrade liebt mäßig basen- und stickstoff-salzhaltigen, trockenen Boden. Nachdem die Kornrade selbst in botanischen Schausammlungen als Unterrichtsmaterial für Studierende der Phytomedizin nicht mehr verfügbar war, hat man die Art weltweit gesucht und wiedergefunden. Inzwischen ist sie sogar im Samenhandel erhältlich. Sie lässt sich leicht in einem breiten Spektrum ökophysiologischer Bedingungen kultivieren, auch im Ziergarten.

Blume des Jahres

Die Kornrade wurde als Blume des Jahres 2003 von der Stiftung Naturschutz Hamburg und der Stiftung zum Schutz gefährdeter Pflanzen erwählt.
