William Roberts (* 30. November 1868 in Lancaster; † 7. Juli 1959 in Tadworth, Surrey) war ein unter dem Pseudonym Ernest Newman bekannter bedeutender englischer Musikkritiker.

Daneben veröffentlichte der Freidenker und Darwin-Bewunderer unter dem Pseudonym Hugh Mortimer Cecil 1897 auch das Werk „Pseudo-philosophy at the End of the Nineteenth Century. An irrationalist trio: Kidd-Drummond-Balfour“[1], in dem der Sozialdarwinismus – besonders in der Form, wie er von Benjamin Kidd und Henry Drummond vertreten wurde – vehement wegen seiner für den Sozialdarwinismus typischen Vermischung von Evolutionsideen mit ideologisch-religiösem Fortschrittsgedanken und teleologischen Inhalten angegriffen und als Pseudowissenschaft dargestellt wird.
