Flag Day

Der Flag Day ist ein US-amerikanischer Gedenktag, der am 14. Juni begangen wird. Er ist kein bundesweiter gesetzlicher Feiertag, Banken, Behörden und Geschäfte gehen ihrem normalen Betrieb nach. Die meisten Schulen haben bereits Sommerferien.

An diesem Tag wird die US-amerikanische Flagge besonders geehrt. Vielerorts wird daher anlässlich des Flag Day die Flagge gesetzt. Gelegentlich werden auch Straßen- und Gebäudeschmuck in den Nationalfarben installiert oder (seltener) festliche Gedenkreden gehalten.

Wie weit die Feierlichkeiten in das öffentliche Leben eingreifen ist regional stark unterschiedlich. In Pennsylvania und Amerikanisch-Samoa ist der Flag Day gesetzlicher Feiertag, der jedoch in Amerikanisch-Samoa am 17. Juni begangen wird. Für Pennsylvania hat der Flag Day besondere Bedeutung, da Betsy Ross in der pennsylvanischen Stadt Philadelphia die erste amerikanische Flagge hergestellt hatte. Am 14. Juni 1777 erklärte der Kontinentalkongress diese zur Flagge der Dreizehn Vereinigten Staaten, also der aufständischen Kolonien im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg.

Ursprung

Der Flag Day konnte sich im Schatten des Nationalfeiertages ('Independence Day') am 4. Juli und des Memorial Day am letzten Montag im Mai nie richtig durchsetzen. Feiern zu Ehren der amerikanischen Flagge fanden bis 1877, wenn überhaupt, nur in unregelmäßigen Abständen statt. Am 14. Juni 1877 wurde dann die Flagge anlässlich ihres hundertsten Geburtstages auf jedem öffentlichen Gebäude gehisst.

Der erste offizielle Flag Day wurde 1893 in Philadelphia gefeiert. In New York wurde der 14. Juni 1897 zum Flag Day bestimmt.

Präsident Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) erklärte den 30. Mai 1916 zum Flag Day. Viele Städte begingen daraufhin den Flag Day immer am 30. Mai.

Erst am 3. August 1949 erklärte Präsident Harry Truman (1945-1953) den 14. Juni zum Flag Day. Seitdem ruft jeder Präsident jedes Jahr erneut den Flag Day aus und ermutigt die Amerikaner dazu, vor ihren Häuser und Geschäften die amerikanische Flagge zu hissen.
