Das Kaliber 6,35 mm Browning (nominal: .25 ACP) wurde 1904 von John Moses Browning in Zusammenarbeit mit der US Firma Union Metallic Cartridge Company und der belgischen staatlichen Waffenfabrik Fabrique Nationale entwickelt und wurde anfangs für Pistolen verwendet. Das Kaliber führt die Reihe der ACP-Kaliber eine Stufe tiefer (unter die .32 ACP). Es wurden Versuche mit der Entwicklung von Schnellfeuerpistolen in diesem Kaliber durchgeführt, die Ergebnisse waren jedoch für den militärischen Einsatz ungenügend. Im allgemeinen wurde die Patrone mit ihren ballistischen Eigenschaften (260 m/s, 90 J) als mangelhaft eingestuft. Die Patrone wurde trotzdem speziell für Taschenpistolen verwendet und wird heute noch als Verteidigungkaliber eingestuft. Aktuell stellt Beretta verschiedene Pistolen (z. B. Beretta 21 Bobcat oder 950 Jetfire) in diesem Kaliber her. Die Patrone wurde universell konstruiert und verfügt über eine HR(Halbrand)-Hülse was die Verwendung in Pistolen sowie Revolvern ermöglicht. Das Geschoss der Patrone ist fast ausschließlich ein mit Tombak ummanteltes Vollmantelgeschoss mit Bleikern. Im Vergleich mit anderen Kalibern lässt sich die Patrone, sofern aus einer Kurzwaffe verschossen, leistungsmäßig über der .22 lfB einordnen.
