Guðbrandur Þorláksson

Guðbrandur Þorláksson (* 1541; † 20. Juli 1627) war ein Mathematiker, Kartograf und Bischof der isländischen Stadt Hólar.

Guðbrandur veröffentlichte 1584 die erste vollständige Übersetzung der Bibel ins Isländische

Er studierte in der Kathedral-Schule Hólar und in der Kopenhagener Universität. Später war er erfolgreicher Rektor der Skálholter Schule, Pfarrer in Breiðabólstaður und Bischof von Hólar bis zu seinem Tod 1627.

Er bearbeitete und veröffentlichte mindestens 80 Bücher während seiner Bischofszeit, darunter auch die Bibelübersetzung ins Isländische und das isländische Gesetzbuch. Er ist auch bekannt dafür, dass er 1590 als erster eine genaue Karte von Island erstellt hat.

Er zeugte mindestens ein Kind, seine Tochter Steinunn, geboren 1571 von Guðrún Gísladóttir. Sein Porträt findet man auch auf der isländischen 50-Kronen-Banknote (mittlerweile kaum noch im Umlauf).
