Ein Hectocotylus ist ein Arm bei männlichen Kopffüßern, der zum Zweck der Fortpflanzung dient und spezielle Baumerkmale aufweist.

Der Tentakel wird zur Befruchtung der weiblichen Eier benutzt und ist so gebaut, dass er die Spermatophoren des Männchen beinhaltet und bei der Paarung abgibt. Üblicherweise wird der Hectocotylus in jeder neuen Paarungssaison von neuem ausgebildet.

Die Form des Armes ist unter einzelnen Spezies unterschiedlich, wenngleich viele von ihnen ähnliche Spezifizierungen zu bestimmten Formen aufweisen. Bei Haliphron atlanticus (Siebenarmiger Octopus) etwa wird der Hectocotylus in einem kleinen Gewebesack in der Nähe des rechten Auges gelagert, was nach außen hin zu dem offenbar siebenarmigen Erscheinen führt.

Ein Sonderfall ist der Hectocotylus des Papierboots Argonauta. Die Befruchtung erfolgt durch den Arm des Männchens, der die Spermatophoren in einer Höhle im Mantel des Weibchens platziert, allerdings muss dazu kein direkter Kontakt entstehen, der Arm ist in der Lage, sich vom Männchen zu lösen und selbstständig zum Weibchen zu schwimmen. Kurios ist an dieser Stelle, dass der abgetrennte Hectocotylus von seinem Namensgeber Georges Cuvier ursprünglich für einen Parasiten am Weibchen gehalten wurde, ehe man ihn dem Männchen zuordnen konnte. Jedoch wurde bereits in den biologischen Werken Aristoteles' der Arm beschrieben, allerdings bis zu seiner Neuentdeckung im 19. Jahrhundert für einen Mythos gehalten.
