Die Alpha Ethniki (griechisch A΄Εθνική) ist die höchste Fußballliga in Griechenland. Seit der Saison 2006/07 heißt sie offiziell Super League (griechisch ΄Υπερ Λέσχη, bzw. Σουπερ Λιγκα).

Aktuell spielen 16 Mannschaften in der Liga. Am Ende der Saison steigen die drei letztplatzierten Mannschaften in die zweite griechische Liga, die Beta Ethniki, ab und werden durch die drei besten Zweitligisten ersetzt.

Für die Europapokal-Wettbewerbe der Saison 2008/09 gelten folgende Regelungen: Der griechische Meister ist für die 3. Qualifikations-Runde der Champions League qualifiziert. Der Gewinner der Playoffs (s. unten) steigt eine Runde eher (Runde Zwei) in die Champions-League-Qualifikation ein. Der griechische Pokalsieger und das zweitplatzierte Team aus den Playoffs sind für die 2. Qualifikationsrunde des UEFA Cups qualifiziert.

Die Playoffs

Die Teams, die sich am Ende der laufenden Super League Saison auf den Plätzen Zwei bis Fünf wiederfinden, spielen in den sogenannten "Playoffs", einem Mini-Ausscheidungsturnier, um die europäischen Startplätze. Dem Sieger der Playoffs ist die Teilnahme an der 2. Qualifikationsrunde der UEFA Champions League sicher. Der Zweitplatzierte qualifiziert sich für die dritte und letzte Ausscheidungsrunde des UEFA Cups, der Drittplatzierte startet in Qualifikationsrunde Zwei des UEFA Cups.
