Implosion
In einer Explosion (oben) wirken die Kräfte vom Zentrum fort, bei einer Implosion (unten) jedoch sind die Kräfte auf das Zentrum selbst gerichtet. Das Objekt bricht in sich selbst zusammen.

Eine Implosion ist der plötzliche Zusammenbruch eines Gefäßes aufgrund eines niedrigeren Innen- als Außendrucks. Sie steht damit im Gegensatz zur Explosion, die sich durch ein umgekehrtes Druckgefälle auszeichnet, wobei also der Innendruck den Außendruck übersteigt.

Eine Implosion kann beispielsweise bei der Zerstörung einer evakuierten Bildröhre eines Fernsehgerätes oder Computermonitors auftreten. Das gleiche gilt für Druckbehälter und Rohrleitungen, die nicht vakuumfest ausgeführt sind und deren Sicherheitsventil versagt. Ursache solcher Implosionen ist dabei der Verlust der Stabilität des Gefäßes, die den Druckunterschied tragen soll. Sie sind mit einem lauten Knall auf Grund des sich rapide ändernden Luftdrucks verbunden. Zwar werden die Trümmerteile dabei ins Innere des zerstörten Gefäßes beschleunigt, werden aber durch Kollisionen nur teilweise abgebremst und fliegen in der Folge explosionsartig auseinander.

Implosionen können auch ohne die mechanische Zerstörung eines Gefässes auftreten. So kollabieren bei der Kavitation, welche zum Beispiel beim Betrieb von Schiffsschrauben entstehen kann, kleine Dampfblasen, die sich zuvor gebildet haben.
