Das Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) ist eine Sammlung von standardisierten Schnittstellen in Computer-Hardware und Firmware, die benutzt wird, um den Computer zu warten und zu verwalten. Außerdem wird es eingesetzt, um automatische Berichte über auftretende Fehler zu erzeugen. Der IPMI-Standard ist eine Entwicklung der Hardware-Hersteller Intel, Hewlett-Packard, NEC und Dell.[1]

Die IPMI Spezifikation liegt in folgenden Versionen vor:

  • IPMI v1.0 (vorgestellt am 16. September 1998)[1]
  • IPMI v1.5 (vorgestellt am 27. Februar 2001)[2]
  • IPMI v2.0 (vorgestellt am 18. Februar 2004)[3]

Die aktuelle Version der IPMI Spezifikation ist IPMI v2.0 Errata Revision 4.[4]

Funktionsweise

IPMI kann über eine serielle Verbindung oder ein lokales Netzwerk mit einem entfernten Rechner kommunizieren. Außerdem können Fehlermeldungen per SNMP gesendet werden.

Die Schnittstellen arbeiten unabhängig von einem Betriebssystem und ermöglichen die Administration auch ohne installiertes oder laufendes Betriebssystem und sogar bei ausgeschaltetem Computer (sofern noch Standby-Spannung vorhanden ist). IPMI funktioniert aber auch im laufenden Betrieb und bietet in diesem Fall mehr Möglichkeiten bei der Wartung als eine herkömmliche im Betriebssystem laufende Verwaltungssoftware. Beispielsweise können die Schalter bzw. Taster für das Ein- und Ausschalten und den Reset aktiviert bzw. deaktiviert werden oder der Computer ein- und ausgeschaltet werden. Mittels Serial Over LAN (SOL) ist unter Anderem auch ein Zugriff auf das BIOS möglich. Auch ein Watchdog ist vorgesehen.

Herzstück des IPMI ist der so genannte Baseboard Management Controller, an den Controller für spezielle Zwecke, etwa die Überwachung einer speziellen Hardware, angeschlossen werden können. Diese Verbindung erfolgt über den so genannten Intelligent Platform Management Bus (IPMB).

Auf aktuellen Server-Mainboards ist der Baseboard Management Controller schon integriert.
