Die Irische Republikanische Bruderschaft (Irish Republican Brotherhood, IRB) wurde 1858 von James Stephens in Dublin gegründet. Die IRB war federführend beim Aufstand von 1867, insbesondere aber beim Osteraufstand von 1916. Ihre Forderungen veröffentlichte sie in der Zeitung The Irish People.
Die IRB verfolgte die Strategie, als kleiner Geheimbund durch die gezielte Unterwanderung von Massenorganisationen möglichst großen Einfluss zu gewinnen. Insbesondere die Irish Volunteers wurden Ziel dieser Politik; der IRB gelang es, einen Großteil der wichtigen Posten mit eigenen Mitgliedern zu besetzen, während sie bewusst darauf verzichtete, auch das Amt des Vorsitzenden zu übernehmen.
Gleichzeitig und koordiniert mit der Gründung der IRB erfolgte die Gründung der Fenian Brotherhood durch James O'Mahony in New York, die sich als amerikanischer Flügel der gleichen Bewegung verstand. Der Ausdruck „Fenians“ wurde später zum Synonym für alle Anhänger der irischen Unabhängigkeit und wird insbesondere in Nordirland bis heute so benutzt.
Die amerikanische Organisation diente vor allem dazu, Geld und Waffen für den irischen Unabhängigkeitskampf zu beschaffen. 1866 machte sie durch eine Reihe von Überfällen auf die britischen Kolonien in Kanada von sich reden. Diese stellten den Versuch dar, britische Truppen in Nordamerika zu binden und so den bewaffneten Kampf in Irland zu unterstützen.
