Ambala (Hindi: अंबाला, Ambālā) ist eine Stadt im nordindischen Bundesstaat Haryana an der Grenze zum Bundesstaat Punjab mit etwa 196.000 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2011). Sie ist Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts Ambala.

Größter Arbeitgeber ist der Hersteller optischer Instrumente, N.K. Jain Instruments Pvt. Ltd., der nationaler Marktführer für Mikroskope ist.

In Ambala befinden sich große Stützpunkte der indischen Armee und Luftstreitkräfte.

Lage

Ambala befindet sich 150 km nördlich der Bundeshauptstadt Neu-Delhi und ist gut an den Straßen- und Schienenverkehr angebunden. Die Grand Trunk Road, hier auch National Highway 1 genannt, führt durch Ambala Cantt und Ambala.

Sehenswürdigkeiten

In der Umgebung von Ambala zählen die Planstadt Chandigarh (genannt „Die schöne Stadt“) und Kurukshetra, wo nach der Bhagavad Gita die Schlacht um Mahabharata ausgetragen wurde, zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten.
