James Douglas-Hamilton, 4. Duke of Hamilton, 1. Duke of Brandon KG, KT, (* 11. November 1658; † 15. November 1712 in London) war 4. Duke of Hamilton.

Leben

James, Earl of Arran, ältester Sohn von William Douglas, wurde 1698, nachdem seine Mutter Anne auf den Titel verzichtet hatte, Duke of Hamilton. Er erhielt 1711 außerdem den Titel eines Duke of Brandon in der Peerage of Great Britain verliehen, wurde aber zu Sitz und Stimme im House of Lords, die er infolge dessen beanspruchen konnte, nicht zugelassen.

Die Union zwischen England und Schottland hatte er anfangs bekämpft, später aber unterstützt. Während der Regierung Queen Annes gehörte er zu den Hauptstützen der Partei der Stuarts in Schottland.

Am 15. November 1712 kam es im Hyde Park zum einem Degenduell Lord Hamiltons mit dem für seine häufige Teilnahme an Duellen berüchtigten Charles Mohun, 4. Baron Mohun. Dabei kamen beide Duellanten ums Leben. Die Sekundanten George Macartney und John Hamilton wurden des Totschlags angeklagt, weil sie den grausamen Kampf nicht verhindert hatten. Der Schriftsteller William Makepeace Thackeray hat in seinem Roman The History of Henry Esmond diese Geschichte bearbeitet.

James Hamiltons Bruder Charles war 1688 zum Earl of Selkirk ernannt worden und vererbte diesen Titel auf seinen Bruder John, der hierdurch der Stifter der Linie Hamilton-Selkirk wurde.

Nachkommen

Der Duke war zweimal verheiratet; zuerst war er vermählt mit Anna, Tochter des Robert Spencer, 2. Earl of Sunderland, in zweiter Ehe heiratete er Elizabeth, Tochter des Digby Gerard, 5. Baron Gerard of Gerard's Bromley mit der er folgende überlebende Kinder hatte:

  • William († 1734)
  • Charlotte (1701–1777), heiratete Charles Edwin
  • Susan (1702–1755), heiratete Anthony Tracy-Keck
  • James (1703–1743), 5. Duke of Hamilton
  • Anne (1709–1748), heiratete Anna Charlotte Maria Powell - seine Nachkommen beerbten die Nachkommen seines älteren Bruders als Dukes of Hamilton 1895 mit Alfred Douglas-Hamilton, 13. Duke of Hamilton

zudem war James Vater eines außerehelich geborenen Sohnes:
