Messkännchen, in der liturgischen Sprache auch als ampullae bezeichnet, sind Sakrales Gerät für Wein und Wasser in der Heiligen Messe der katholischen und der anglikanischen Kirche.

Während der Eucharistiefeier werden zwei mit Wein und Wasser gefüllte Kännchen herbeigebracht, die aus edlen Metallen, z. B. Silber, Kupfer, Messing oder Zinn, oder auch aus Glas angefertigt sind. Der Wein steht hier als Symbol für das Blut Christi, das Wasser für die menschliche Natur. Während der Gabenbereitung werden Wein und ein wenig Wasser in den Kelch gegossen und vermischen sich somit untrennbar.

Die ornamentale und formale Gestalt der Kännchen richtet sich nach dem jeweils herrschenden Kunststil der verschiedenen Zeiten. Während in Italien die Kännchen mit einer dünnen Ausgießröhre versehen sind, haben sie in Frankreich die Form von Fläschchen oder Krüglein. Sie stehen auf einem Tablett, das oft auch bei der Händewaschung des zelebrierenden Priesters das abfließende Wasser auffängt. Oft sind die Kännchen mit einem Deckel zu verschließen.

Der Gebrauch von Messkännchen wird schon im 5. Jahrhundert erwähnt.
