Judy Holliday

Judy Holliday (* 21. Juni 1921 in New York City, New York; † 7. Juni 1965 in New York City) war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin und Sängerin.

Leben

Geboren wurde sie als Judith Tuvim in New York City, als einziges Kind von Abe und Helen Tuvim, die jüdische Emigranten aus Russland waren. Tuvim ähnelt dem jiddischen Wort für Festzeit, Feiertage, englisch Holiday, daraus wurde dann Holliday.

Judy Holliday gewann 1950 einen Oscar und einen Golden Globe als beste Schauspielerin für ihre Rolle in George Cukors Die ist nicht von gestern und 1957 einen Tony Award für ihre Rolle in dem Musical Bells Are Ringing.

Anfang der 1950er-Jahre wurde sie aufgrund des Gerüchts, sie stehe den Kommunisten nahe, Ziel einer Untersuchung des Komitees für unamerikanische Umtriebe des Repräsentantenhauses. Obwohl sie nach einem kurzen Berufsverbot schnell wieder rehabilitiert wurde, war ihre verheißungsvolle Karriere praktisch beendet und sie bekam beim Film keine größeren Rollen mehr.

1948 hatte sie den Komponisten Dave Oppenheim geheiratet und wurde 1957 geschieden. Aus der Ehe ging ein Sohn hervor (Jonathan Oppenheim, geb. 11. November 1952).

Judy Holliday starb kurz vor ihrem 44. Geburtstag an Brustkrebs.
