Kökschetau (kasachisch Көкшетау - blauer Berg; russisch Кокчетав/Koktschetaw) ist eine Stadt in Kasachstan.

Geografische Lage

Kökschetau ist die Hauptstadt des Gebiets Aqmola. Sie liegt im Norden des Landes unweit der Hauptstadt Astana.

Bevölkerung

Die Stadt hat 133.561 Einwohner (2009).

Geschichte

Kökschetau wurde am 29. April 1824 gegründet und bekam 1895 die Stadtrechte verliehen. 1944 wurde es Hauptstadt der neugegründeten Oblast Koktschetaw. 1997 verlor die Stadt die Funktion der Gebietshauptstadt und wurde Teil Nordkasachstans bis sie 1999 dem Gebiet Aqmola zugeschlagen und dessen neues Verwaltungszentrum wurde (Der bisherige Hauptort Aqmola wurde aus dem gleichnamigen Gebiet ausgegliedert und als Astana neue Hauptstadt Kasachstans).

Landschaft

Die Stadt liegt in landschaftlich reizvoller Umgebung mit Kurorten wie Borowoje, Serenda oder Schjutschje und es herrscht einiger Tourismus.

Infrastruktur

Kökschetau hat drei Universitäten und einen Flughafen.

Wirtschaft

Das nahegelegene Kökschetau-Massiv ist reich an verschiedenen Mineralen. Unter anderem wird dort eine Goldmine betrieben.

Kökschetau ist Endpunkt einer der größten Stromleitungen der Erde, der mit 1150 kV betriebenen Drehstromleitung Ekibastus–Kökschetau.

Im Jahr 2002 hatte Kökschetau kurzzeitig einen schiefen Turm, nachdem der 1965 errichtete 180 Meter hohe Sendeturm der Stadt in Folge Unterspülung seiner Fundamente sich zur Seite neigte. Er wurde in der Folgezeit durch eine permanente stählerne Hilfskonstruktion stabilisiert.

Sport

In der Stadt ist der Fußballverein Oqschetpes beheimatet.
