Der Lance Corporal (kurz: LCpl oder L/Cpl) ist ein militärischer Dienstgrad, der von vielen Streitkräften, Polizeieinheiten und anderen gleichwertig organisierten Organisationen weltweit benutzt wird. Er steht über dem Dienstgrad Private First Class (U.S. Marines) bzw. Private Class 1-3 (British Army/ Royal Marines) und unterhalb des Dienstgrades Corporal (U.S. Marines) bzw. Lance Sergeant (British Foot Guards & Honourable Artillery Company). Es ist der niedrigste Unteroffiziersdienstgrad oder wie in den meisten Fällen der höchste Mannschaftsdienstgrad, für gewöhnlich gleichbedeutend mit dem NATO-Rangcode OR-3. Er ist beispielsweise im U.S. Marine Corps, den Royal Marines und der British Army zu finden. Außerdem haben viele Länder einen gleichbedeutenden Dienstgrad in ihren Streitkräften.

Geschichte

Der vermutliche Ursprung des Lance Corporal leitet sich aus einem Zusammenschluss des Corporal mit dem (veralteten, mittelalterlichen Begriff) des Dienstgrades Lancepesade einem ehemals niedrigsten Dienstgrad eines Unteroffiziers ab. Der mittelalterliche Corporal führte eine Gruppe Soldaten, unterstützt wurde er dabei vom Lancepesade, einem Kriegsveteran. Der Lancepesade wiederum leitet sich vom mittelalterlich- italienischen Lancia Spezzata her, was so viel bedeutet wie "gebrochene Lanze" (engl. "broken lance") oder "gebrochener Speer" (engl. "broken spear"), um mit dieser Metapher anzudeuten, dass diese Einheit Kampferfahrung besitzt.[1][2]

Dienstgradabzeichen

Der britische Lance Corporal hat als Dienstgradabzeichen einen mit der Spitze nach unten zeigenden gelben bzw. goldfarbenen Uniformwinkel, der amerikanische einen gelben nach oben zeigenden Uniformwinkel auf rotem (beigen oder schwarzem, je nach Uniform) Hintergrund, mit zwei darunter sich kreuzenden Gewehren.

Im 19. Jahrhundert hatte der britische Lance Corporal noch zwei nach unten zeigende weiße Uniformwinkel als Dienstgradabzeichen.
