Lawa (Suriname)

Die Lawa (auch Aoua) ist ein Grenzfluss zwischen Suriname und Französisch-Guayana.

Quellflüsse der Lawa sind der Litani und der Marouini (auch Marowini) [1]. Die Lawa und der Tapanahony fließen bei der Flussinsel Stoelmanseiland zum Marowijne zusammen[2].

Im mittleren Verlauf des Flusses befinden sich sehr viele Goldminen. 1902 entschied der Surinamischer Gouverneur Cornelis Lely zum aufbau der Lawabahn von Paramaribo zu dieser Goldlagerstätte. Wegen der enttäuschenden Goldumsätze, wurde vom Gleis jedoch nur der erste Hälfte von Paramaribo errichtet.

Bei einer schweren Überschwemmung im Mai 2006 trat der Fluss stark über die Ufer[3].
