Die Anorexie (Kunstwort, zusammengesetzt aus α privativum und griech. ὄρεξις „Verlangen“), auch die Inappetenz (abgeleitet von lateinisch appetītus „das Verlangen“ und in- als verneinender Vorsilbe), ist der medizinische Fachbegriff für Appetitlosigkeit. Die Magersucht (Anorexia nervosa), eine psychisch bedingte Sonderform der Anorexie, wird manchmal ebenfalls verkürzend als „Anorexie“ bezeichnet, was medizinisch gesehen jedoch nicht korrekt ist.

Symptome und Beschwerden

Bei Anorexie kommt es zum Verlust des Appetits oder des Verlangens nach Nahrung. Bei länger andauernder Anorexie lässt das Hungergefühl nach und es kommt zu schweren körperlichen Schäden.

Ursachen

Anorexie kann als Symptom zum Beispiel bei fast allen schweren Infektionskrankheiten auftreten, aber auch bei Tumorerkrankungen, bei dauerhaftem Missbrauch psychoaktiver Substanzen oder als eigenständige psychische Störung (Anorexia nervosa, Magersucht).

Folgen und Komplikationen

Anorexie kann lebensgefährlich werden und schwere körperliche Schäden verursachen. Sie führt zu Mangel an Nährstoffen mit Abbau von Körpergeweben (Katabolismus), Abmagerung (Inanition) bis hin zum Marasmus (Energie- und Proteinmangel) oder zur Kachexie (krankhaft starke Abmagerung).

Schnell eintretende Folgen einer Anorexie sind insbesondere an den Organen mit hoher Stoffwechselaktivität und Bausteinen mit kurzer Halbwertszeit sichtbar, etwa ein Albuminmangel im Blut mit der Bildung von Ödemen (→ Hungerödem).
