Louis Fraser

Louis Fraser (* 1810; † 1866) war ein britischer Zoologe und Sammler.

In seinen jungen Jahren war Fraser Kurator des Museums der Zoological Society of London. Er nahm an Allens und Thomsons berüchtigter Niger-Expedition zwischen 1841 und 1842 als Wissenschaftler der African Civilization Society teil.[1] Nach seiner Rückkehr war er für die Sammlung von Lord Derby in Knowsley verantwortlich.[2]

Er schrieb Zoologica Typica, or figures of the new and rare animals and birds in the collection of the Zoological Society of London, einen reichlich illustrierten Folianten, der 1940 veröffentlicht wurde. In diesem Buch beschrieb er eine Vielzahl neuer Vogelarten. 1850 wurde Fraser zum Konsul von Ouidah, Dahomey ernannt.[3] 1859 sammelte er in Ecuador Vögel und Säugetiere für Philip Lutley Sclater von der Zoological Society of London, und im folgenden Jahr in Kalifornien. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach London eröffnete er in der Regent Street ein Geschäft für exotische Vögel. Seine letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte er in Amerika.
