Lage von Luena in Angola

Luena (auch Lwena genannt) ist eine Stadt im Osten Angolas und Hauptstadt der Provinz Moxico. Zur Zeit der portugiesischen Kolonialherrschaft hieß sie Luso oder Vila Luso, bevor sie nach der Erlangung der Unabhängigkeit Angolas umbenannt wurde nach dem Fluss Luena.

Nach letzterem wird auch das Volk der Luvale in Angola Luena genannt.

Schätzungen über die Einwohnerzahl Luenas variieren zwischen 60.000 bis 200.000 Menschen, Bevölkerungsstatistik.de gibt für 2007 gar 21.000[1] an. Eine unbekannte Zahl von Binnenvertriebenen (30.000 bis 60.000) floh vor dem Bürgerkrieg in Angola nach Luena. Am 4. April 2002 unterzeichneten die angolanische Regierung und die Rebellen der UNITA hier das Luena Memorandum of Understanding, welches das Ende des Krieges besiegelte[2].

Die Stadt ist Sitz eines Bischofs.
