Barry Manilow (* 17. Juni 1943 in Brooklyn; gebürtig Barry Alan Pincus) ist ein US-amerikanischer Sänger.

Leben

Manilow wurde als Barry Alan Pincus in Brooklyn geboren. Als er zwei Jahre alt war, verließ der Vater die Familie und er nahm den Geburtsnamen der Mutter Edna an. Er lernte Klavier spielen und wurde der Pianist und Arrangeur von Bette Midler. Gemeinsam hatten sie ihre ersten Erfolge mit Bühnenshows in Night Clubs in New York. Er produzierte 1972 auch das erste Album von Bette Midler.

Der Erfolg mit Bette Midler sorgte dafür, dass er 1973 sein erstes Soloalbum veröffentlichen konnte. 1974 hatte er mit dem Song Mandy seinen ersten Welthit und wohl bis heute seinen größten Erfolg. Mit diesem Song begann seine weltweite Karriere als einer der erfolgreichsten Sänger im Showbusiness. Innerhalb von fünf Jahren verkaufte er 23 Millionen Schallplatten. In den 1980er Jahren gingen zwar seine Plattenverkäufe zurück, doch trat er 1984 zehn Abende in der ausverkauften Radio City Music Hall in New York auf und spielte mit Größen der Jazzmusik das musikalisch hoch gelobte Album 2:00 A.M. Paradise Café ein.

Ab 1989 zog er mit seiner Show Live on Broadway auf einer erfolgreichen Mammut-Tournee um die Welt.

In den 1990ern setzte er diese Karriere mit der Tournee Showstoppers (einer Revue aus bekannten Musical Melodien) fort und trat gefeiert in den großen Shows in Las Vegas auf.

1993 sang er zur Amtseinführung Bill Clintons vor 16 000 Politikern aus aller Welt Let Freedom Ring. Auch seine Musicals waren große Erfolge: 1994 wurde Copacabana in London uraufgeführt, ab 1997 lief Harmony (über das Schicksal der Comedian Harmonists) in San Diego, Kalifornien an.

Seit 2003 hat Manilow wiederholt gesundheitliche Probleme. 2003 war er versehentlich gegen eine Mauer in seinem Haus in Palm Springs gestoßen. Im Februar 2004 wurde er mit starken Schmerzen ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert, die sich als durch Stress verursacht herausstellten. Am 8. August 2006 wurde bekannt gegeben, dass er sich einer Hüftoperation unterziehen müsse.

Derzeit steht Manilow jeden Abend im Las Vegas Hilton auf der Bühne. Wegen seiner Hüftoperation wurden allerdings mindestens 20 Konzerte von „Manilow: Music and Passion“ auf 2007 verschoben.

Im September 2007 sagte Manilow einen Auftritt in der US-Fernsehshow „The View“ ab, die von Elisabeth Hasselbeck moderiert wird. Grund für die Absage war die positive Haltung der Moderatorin zum Irak-Krieg.[1]
