Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC ist seit 2005 eine 100%ige Tochter der 1887 gegründeten Ohio Oil Company und hat ihren Stammsitz in Houston, Texas. Aufgrund des erfolgreichen Kraftstoffmarkennamens Marathon firmierte Ohio Oil 1962 um in Marathon Oil Company, wodurch Marathon ein Synonym für das Produkt und das Unternehmen wurde. 1998 gründete Marathon zusammen mit Ashland Inc. die Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP), die heute die sechstgrößte Erdölraffinerie der USA ist.
