Der Stützpunkt Marine Barracks Washington (D.C.) oder Marine Barrack 8th and I (8th and I) ist die älteste Basis des US Marine Corps (USMC), seit 1806 der Sitz des Commandant und damit auch der Sitz des Hauptquartiers des USMC. Der Stützpunkt liegt an der 8. und 1. Straße Südost in Washington (D.C.) und wurde 1801 gegründet.

Geschichte

Die Gebäude der Marine Barracks sind einige der ältesten Washingtons und auch denkmalgeschützt. Als die Briten Washington im Britisch-Amerikanischen Krieg von 1812 niederbrannten, wurden auch die Baracken der Marines in Mitleidenschaft gezogen, die in der Schlacht bei Bladensburg unterlagen.

Heute sind die Marine Barracks von der 8. und 1. und von der 9. und der G-Straße Südost umgeben und sind seit 1972 eine registrierte Sehenswürdigkeit im National Register of Historic Places.

Marines, die in Washington (D.C.) stationiert werden, müssen eine bestimmte Größen- und Gewichtsvorgaben erfüllen, denn sie sind verantwortlich für die zeremonielle Pararaden. Diese finden jeden Dienstagabend und zu anderen Zeiten am United States Marine Corps War Memorial statt.
