Masoret

Die Masoreten sind die Überlieferer der Hebräischen Bibel im Judentum. Sie edierten den Masoretischen Text des Tanach, der sich als maßgeblicher hebräischer Text des Alten Testaments durchsetzte.

Im engeren Sinn sind meist diejenigen Masoreten gemeint, die etwa zwischen 780 und 930 in Tiberias den Bibeltext einer sehr genauen Prüfung unterzogen und ein eigenes, hochentwickeltes System zur genaueren Fixierung des Texts entwickelten.

Überliefert sind die Namen der Masoretenfamilien Ben Ascher und Ben Naftali. Der Masoretische Text verdankt diesen beiden Familien einen guten Teil seiner hohen Qualität. Von manchen Forschern werden beide Familien den Karäern zugerechnet.

Die Religionsgemeinschaft der Karäer hat ihre eigenen masoretischen Traditionen.

Bekannte Masoreten

  • Ascher der Alte, der Große
  • Moses (Mosche) ben Ascher, Ben Ascher, wirkte in Tiberias. Er war ein Enkel Ascher des Großen. Konsonantenbestand und Punktation des Kairoer Prophetenkodex wurden traditionell ihm zugeschrieben (in jüngerer Zeit bestritten, s. Codex Cairensis).
  • Aaron ben Mosche ben Ascher wirkte in Tiberias in der ersten Hälfte des 10. Jahrhunderts. Er war der Sohn des Moses ben Ascher und wurde zur führenden masoretischen Autorität. Sein Text setzte sich gegenüber dem Text Ben Naftalis durch. Eine Abschrift seines Textes stellt der Codex Leningradensis dar. Die Punktation und Masora des Codex von Aleppo stammt von ihm.
  • Ben Naftali etwa 890-940, wirkte vermutlich ebenfalls in Tiberias. Sein Vorname ist unklar. Möglich sind: Jakob ben Naftali, Moses ben David ben Naftali, Ben David ben Naftali
