Die beiden Arten der Tarpune (Megalops) sind urtümliche, schon aus der Kreidezeit bekannte Vertreter der Echten Knochenfische (Teleostei).

Der Tarpun (Megalops atlanticus) aus dem Atlantik wird zwei Meter lang und über zwei Zentner schwer. Er lebt im Winter auf der Hochsee, und wandert im Sommer an die Küste von Brasilien bis auf die Höhe von New York. Dort jagen sie fliegende Fische.

Die Tiere wandern auch in die Flüsse und junge Fische können auch in kleinsten Wasserpfützen überleben, weil sie mit ihrer Schwimmblase Luft atmen können.

Der Tarpun ist bei Sportfischern beliebt weil er stark kämpft und beim Versuch, sich von der Schnur zu befreien in spektakulären Sprüngen aus dem Wasser schießt. Sein Fleisch soll allerdings nicht sehr gut sein.

Indopazifischer Tarpun (Megalops cyprinoides)

Der Indopazifische Tarpun (Megalops cyprinoides) lebt im Roten Meer, an der Küste Südafrikas, im Indischen Ozean bis nach Südkorea und der Küste Australiens im Westpazifik. In Ostafrika wandern die Jungtiere weit die Flüsse z.B. den Sambesi hinauf. Sie werden 1,5 Meter lang. Der Indopazifische Tarpun wird in Aquakulturen gezüchtet und auch geangelt.
