Mestel

Andrew Jonathan Mestel (* 13. März 1957 in Cambridge) ist ein englischer Schachspieler.

Mestel gewann 1974 die Weltmeisterschaft der unter 16-Jährigen und dreimal die Britische Meisterschaft (1976, 1983 und 1988). Beim Traditionsturnier von Hastings belegte er 1983/84 den dritten Platz. Mestel spielte zwischen 1976 und 1988 sechsmal erfolgreich für England bei Schacholympiaden.

Er wurde 1977 Internationaler Meister und 1982 Großmeister des Weltschachverbandes FIDE. Er besitzt zudem den Großmeistertitel im Lösen von Schachproblemen, im Jahre 2002 wurde er Dritter, 2005 Zweiter der Weltmeisterschaften in dieser Disziplin.

Mestel ist im Turnierschach nur wenig aktiv und spielt vor allem in der britischen Schachliga 4NCL. Er arbeitet als promovierter Mathematiker am Imperial College in London. Jonathan Mestel ist der Sohn des Astronomen Leon Mestel.

Seine aktuelle Elo-Zahl beträgt 2475 (Stand: April 2008).
