32-Bit

32-Bit ist ein Attribut, das vielfältig im Bereich der Computertechnik verwendet wird. Es dient dort der Abgrenzung gleichartiger Techniken mit anderer Bitzahl, meist der halben oder doppelten Bitzahl (hier 16-Bit und 64-Bit). Ohne weiteren Kontext verweist es meist auf die Ausrichtung auf eine 32-Bit-Architektur („32-Bit-Betriebssystem“, „32-Bit-PC“).

Im Zusammenhang mit Prozessoren ist oftmals die Rede von unterschiedlichen Generationen, deren Unterschied im Wesentlichen in der Breite der Datenpfade der jeweiligen ALU liegt: es gibt 8, 16, 32 und 64 Bit breite ALUs. Analog spricht man zum Beispiel von 32-Bit-Hauptprozessoren.

In der Computertechnik findet man das 32-Bit-Attribut häufig für:

  • 32-Bit-Hauptprozessor (engl. Central Processing Unit, CPU) – zur Bezeichnung der ALU-Berechnungsbreite, meist auch intern (nicht-segmentierte) Adressbreite
  • 32-Bit-Bus – Datenleitungen insbesondere bei externen vieladrigen Kabeln
  • 32-Bit-Betriebssystem (engl. Operating System, OS) – Ausrichtung auf 32-Bit-Hauptprozessor und maximal 4 GiB Arbeitsspeicher

32 Bit ist die logische Adressbreite der in den Jahren 1990 bis 2006 üblichen PC-Systeme.

Die Breite des Adressbus ist indirekt mit der Breite des Datenbus verknüpft, da der Inhalt einer 32-Bit-Speicherstelle als Adresse einer weiteren Speicherstelle interpretiert werden kann. Mit einem 32-Bit-Adressbus lassen sich 232 Speicherstellen mit jeweils einem Byte adressieren. Dies entspricht 4 GByte, da die kleinste adressierbare Einheit ein Byte ist und jede Adress-Leitung ein Byte adressieren kann.

Dabei gilt, dass nicht jedes System mit 32-bittigen Datenpfaden auch über 32-bittige Adresspfade verfügt. Neben Segmentierung zur Erweiterung des Adressraums gibt es auch den Extremfall mit 16-bittigem Adressraum.
