Azarias, S. (1)

1S. Azarias, Proph. (3. Febr.). Hebr. Azarjahu = Hilfe Gottes. – Der hl. Azarias, nach 2. Paral. 15, 1–7 ein Prophet zu Symbatha im Königreich Juda unter dem Könige Asa, war der Sohn des Oded (Obed) und vermuthlich der Lehrmeister des Königs. Als der König Asa über König Zara von Aethiopien (Chus) den Sieg davon getragen hatte (2. Paral. 14, 9–15), ging ihm Azarias entgegen, ermahnte ihn zur Gottesfurcht und brachte es dahin, daß der König allen Götzendienst bei Todesstrafe verbieten ließ. Nach den griech. Menäen brachte er eine Pythonissa zum Schweigen, verkündete dem Volk der Juden viel Unheil, welches nach dem Tode Christi über sie kommen sollte, und starb zu Symbatha. Er wird bei den Griechen am 3. Febr. verehrt.
