Thesaurus (griech., »Schatz«), bei den alten Griechen soviel wie Schatzkammer, Schatzhaus. Eine Anzahl von unterirdischen vorhistorischen Kuppelbauten, von denen das sogen. Schatzhaus des Atreus in Mykenä das bekannteste ist, wurden von den spätern Griechen für Schatzhäuser gehalten, haben sich aber vor der modernen Forschung als Gräber (s. Kuppelgräber) erwiesen. In der historischen Zeit errichteten die einzelnen Staaten innerhalb des Bezirks allgemein angesehener Heiligtümer (z. B. der zu Olympia und Delphi) eigne Thesauren zur Aufnahme der von ihnen dargebrachten Weihgeschenke. Sie hatten die Form kleiner Tempel. – In der Wissenschaft dient das Wort häufig zur Bezeichnung umfangreicher Sammelwerke, besonders Wörterbücher. Bekannt sind namentlich: der »T. antiquitatum graecarum« von Gronovius und »T. antiquitatum romanarum« von Grävius, der »T. linguae graecae« von H. Stephanus und der seit einigen Jahren begonnene mächtige »T. linguae latinae« (s. d.).
