Cañons

Cañons (span., spr. kanjōns, »Röhren«), in Nordamerika Name der tiefeingeschnittenen Flußbetten mit fast senkrechten Uferwänden, wie dergleichen an vielen Punkten der Erde vorkommen, z. B. im Jura und in den Alpen, wo sie Klausen, Cluses, Klammen oder Tobel genannt werden. Am großartigsten und merkwürdigsten treten diese Erosionstäler in Texas und besonders in New Mexico, am westlichen Colorado und seinen Quellflüssen auf dem hohen Plateau zwischen den Rocky Mountains und der Sierra Nevada auf. Das längste ist dort der sogen. Große Cañon des Colorado, 383 km lang und mit 800–1300 m hohen, fast senkrecht aufsteigenden Wänden (s. Tafel »Talbildungen I«, Fig. 1 u. 2). Jeder der C. hat Seitencañons, und diese haben wiederum Seitenschluchten. Die Uferwände bestehen zum größten Teil aus horizontalen oder wenig geneigten Sandsteinschichten, unter denen an einigen Stellen Granit hervortritt. Auch die Lößgebiete Chinas (s. Löß) sind von ähnlichen Schluchten durchzogen. C. in kleinem Maßstabe sind das Annatal, die Landgrafenschlucht und die Drachenschlucht bei Eisenach.
