Farrar, Frederick William, engl. Theolog, geb. 7. Aug. 1831 in Bombay, studierte auf dem King's College in London und in Cambridge, wurde 1857 Priester, hielt dann Vorlesungen in Cambridge und Oxford und wurde später Lehrer, endlich Direktor der Marlborough School in Harrow, 1873 Hofkaplan, 1876 Oberpfarrer der St. Margaretenkirche, 1883 Erzdiakon von Westminster, 1895 Dechant von Canterbury. Von seinen zahlreichen Schriften erwähnen wir: »Life of Christ« (1874, in zahlreichen Auflagen; deutsch von Walther, 5. Aufl., Berl. 1899); »Life and work of St. Paul« (1879, 2 Bde., zuletzt 1898); »The early days of Christianity« (1882, 2 Bde.); »History of interpretation« (1886); »Lives of the Fathers« (1888, 2 Bde.); »The life of Christ as represented in art« (1894); »The book of Daniel« (1895); »The Bible, its meaning and supremacy« (1897, 2. Aufl. 1901); »True Religion« (1899); »Life of lives, further studies in the life of Christ« (1900). F. ist einer der Vorkämpfer der Temperenzbewegung in England.
