Homer

Homer (spr. hōmĕr), Winslow, nordamerikan. Maler, geb. 24. Febr. 1836 in Boston, trat mit 19 Jahren bei einem Lithographen in die Lehre, wo er zwei Jahre blieb. 1859 zog er nach New York, studierte in der Nationalakademie und lieferte zahlreiche Illustrationen für Bücher und Zeitschriften. Beim Ausbruch des Bürgerkrieges ging er nach Washington, zeichnete Kriegsszenen für »Harper's Weekly« und trat um diese Zeit auch mit seinen ersten Ölbildern: Kriegsgefangene vor der Fronte, Home sweet home und Zuaven, die nach der Wurfscheibe werfen, hervor. Nachdem er sich 1867–68 in Europa aufgehalten hatte, stellte er alljährlich in der Gesellschaft der Aquarellmaler und in der Nationalakademie seine Bilder aus, die sich durch treffende Charakteristik der Gestalten und originelle Pointen wie durch große Kühnheit und Breite der Behandlung auszeichnen.
