Kennedy

Kennedy, 1) Grace, engl. Romanschriftstellerin, geb. 1782 zu Pinmore in der Grafschaft Ayr, lebte meist in Edinburg, wo sie 28. Febr. 1825 starb. Ihre bekanntesten Schriften, die eine tiefe Religiosität bekunden und fortwährend in neuen Auflagen erscheinen, sind: »Jessy Allan«, »The decision«, »Anna Ross«, »Father Clement« und »Dunallan«. Ihre »Sämtlichen Werke« wurden mehrfach ins Deutsche übersetzt.

2) John Pendleton, amerikan. Politiker und Schriftsteller, geb. 25. Okt. 1795 in Baltimore, gest. 18. Aug. 1870 in New Port (Rhode-Island), studierte die Rechte, wurde 1816 Advokat und gab 1818 bis 1820 mit P. Hoffmann Cruse »The Red Book«, eine Zeitschrift in Prosa und Versen, heraus, die großen Anklang fand. Seit 1837 Mitglied des Kongresses, wurde er 1852 von Fillmore zum Marinesekretär ernannt, in welcher Stellung er Kanes zweite Nordpolexpedition unterstützte. Doch trat er schon 1853 von dem Amt zurück und beschäftigte sich fortan hauptsächlich mit Literatur. Außer mehreren politischen Schriften veröffentlichte er die mehrfach ausgelegten Novellen: »Swallow Barn« (1832), »Horse-Shoe Robinson« (1835; deutsch, Leipz. 1853) und »Rob of the Bowl« (1838); ferner »Life of William Wirt, attorney general of the United States« (Philad. 1849, 2 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1854), »Mr. Ambrose's letters on the rebellion« (New York 1865) u. a. Gesammelt erschienen seine »Political and official papers« (New York 1872). Vgl. Tuckerman, Life of John Pendleton K. (New York 1871).

3) William, brit. Marineoffizier und Reisender, geb. 1824 in Irland, gest. 25. Jan. 1890 in Winnipeg (Kanada), leitete 1851–52 eine Expedition zur Aufsuchung Franklins und entdeckte dabei die Bellotstraße, durch die er zu Schlitten bis Prince of Wales-Land gelangte. Er schrieb: »A short narrative of the second voyage of the Prince Albert in search of Sir John Franklin« (Lond. 1853).

4) Edmund, austral. Forschungsreisender, gest. 13. Dez. 1848, wurde Regierungsfeldmesser und begleitete 1846 Mitchell auf seiner Expedition zum Barcoo, dessen Lauf K. 1847 aufnahm. Darauf mit der Erforschung der York-Halbinsel beauftragt, wurde er durch einen Speerwurf der Eingebornen getötet.
