Ashley

Ashley (spr. äschlī), 1) Anthony Evelyn Melbourne, engl. Schriftsteller und Politiker, geb. 24. Juli 1836 als jüngerer Sohn des Grafen von Shaftesbury, wurde 1863 Sachwalter in London und war 1858–65 Privatsekretär Lord Palmerstons. Im Mai 1874 wurde er ins Unterhaus gewählt. Er schloß sich der liberalen Partei an, wurde im April 1880 Sekretär des Handelsamtes und im Mai 1882 Unterstaatssekretär im Kolonialministerium. Im Juni 1885 trat A. mit dem Ministerium Gladstone zurück und verlor bei den Neuwahlen Ende des Jahres seinen Sitz im Unterhaus. Er schrieb als Fortsetzung der Biographie von Lord Dalling and Bulwer: »Life of Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston, 1846–1865« (Lond. 1876, 2 Bde.).
