Mac Donald, George, engl. Dichter, geb. 1824 in Huntly (Grafschaft Aberdeen), gest. Ende September 1905 in Sagamore (Surrey), studierte Theologie am Independent College in Highbury, war auch als Geistlicher tätig, widmete sich dann aber in London ausschließlich literarischer Tätigkeit; die letzten Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte er meist in Bordighera. Auf das Drama »Within and without« (1855) folgten von Dichtungen: »Poems« (1857), »Phantastes, a faerie romance« (1858), »The hidden life, and other poems« (1864) und »The disciple, and other poems« (1867). Unter seinen vielen Romanen sind als »schottisch« zu erwähnen: »David Elginbrod« (1862) und »Adela Cathcart« (1864, mit eingestreuten Balladen und Liedern von großer Schönheit); als »englisch«: »Annals of a quiet neighbourhood« (1866) und »The seabord parish« (1868). Nicht minder trefflich ist: »Alec Forbes of Howglen« (1865).
