Angora (Anguri), 1) Departement im osmanisch-asiatischen Ejalet Bozok, Binnenprovinz; Gebirg: Elmatagh; Flüsse: Kisil-Irmak, Sakaria, Bartin u. a.; bringt u. a. auch angorische Ziegen, Katzen, Kaninchen, gute Pfirschen, Wein. Hier die Districte Kianghri Viram-Scheher, Kastamuni, Tschurupe; 2) (Anguri, turkomanisch Aidinkari, tatarisch Kermen Akra, arabisch Amuria, od. Kalai Mutabak [aufgeschichtetes Schloß], od. Kalai Silasil [Kettenschloß]), Hauptstadt den Departements, bes. Handel mit Kämelgarn u. Camelot, [497] Sitz einesgriechischen u. armenischen Bischofs; 40,000 Ew., wovon 1/3 armenische Christen sind. Hier noch stattliche Überreste der alten Burg, auf deren Spitze 2 weiße marmorne antike Löwen stehen. Hier auch das Ankyranische Marmor (Ancyranum monumentum); dies ist das 2. Volumen, welches dem bei den Vestalinnen deponirten u. von diesen am 19. Aug. 767 a. u. producirten Testamente des Kaisers Augustus, nebst 2 anderen beigegeben war; es enthielt des Kaisers Index rerum a se gestarum, den er auf 2 Erzpfeilern vor seinem Mausoleum einzugraben befohlen hatte. Von diesen wurden Abschriften für die, zu Ehren des Augustus errichteten Tempel angefertigt, auch für den zu A. Es waren aber 6 Pfeiler od. Tafeln, 3 rechts, 3 links des Eingangs in den Tempel, od. wohl vielmehr 2 dreiseitige Pfeiler, deren 3 Seiten beschrieben waren. Entdeckt wurde das Anc. mon. von Busbecq u. zuletzt herausgeg. von Franz u. Zumpt, Berl. 1845. A. hieß im Alterthum Ankyra u. war Hauptstadt der Tekiosager in Galatien, mit fester Burg, von Midas erbaut, von Alexander dem Großen eingenommen u. eine Zeitlang zum Aufenthalt gewählt; Kaiser Augustus machte sie nach dem Tode des Amyntas zum Hauptort von Galatia, wo sie Emporium des Handels zwischen Byzanz u. Ostasien wurde; sie sank unter den griechischen Kaisern sehr. 2 Kirchenversammlungen (315 u. 358) wurden hier gehalten. Hier schlug 1402 Tamerlan den Bajazet I. u. fing ihn. 3) Stadt im osmanisch-asiatischen Ejalet Bozok.
