Cloāke

Cloāke (v. lat. Cloaca), 1) unterirdischer Kanal, bes. in den Straßen einer Stadt, welcher die Unreinigkeiten aus derselben u. den anliegenden Häusern, durch Regen- od. fließendes Wasser, abführt; schnelle u. vollständige Aufnahme, Fort- u. Ableitung, bedungen von starkem Gefälle u. Durchströmung von Reinigungsgewässern, durch Hineinleitung aus den Aquädueten, zweckmäßige Regulirung des Windzuges, sind Haupterfordernisse guter C-n; es müssen daher die Einmündungen in den Straßen groß u. zahlreich genug u. durch eiserne Gitter hinlänglich verwahrt sein; die Gewölbe der C. müssen stark u. so geräumig sein, daß ein Mann zur Reinigung durchkriechen kann. Berühmt sind die C-n des alten Roms, die in den Tibris führten. Über diese, bes. die Cloaca maxima, das Cloacarium (Cloakensteuer) u. die Cloacarum servitus, s. u. Rom (a. Geogr.); 2) bei den Vögeln das Ende des Mastdarms.
