Correspondent, 1) Jemand, der correspondirt, d.h. mit einem Andern in brieflichem Verkehre steht; 2) der Commis, welcher auf einem Comptoire die Beantwortung der eingehenden Briefe besorgt; [463] 3) (Berichterstatter), Jemand, der über Waaren- u. Börsenverkehr, über politische Ereignisse u. Tagesneuigkeiten Berichte liefert. Solche C-en halten größere Handlungshäuser an verschiedenen Haupthandelsplätzen u. Zeitungsredactionen an den Orten, wo das politische Leben sich concentrirt od. vorübergehend wichtige Ereignisse stattfinden, z.B. auf Kriegsschauplätzen; derartige Berichte nennt man daher auch Correspondenzen. Originalcorespondenzen sind in Zeitungen gewöhnlich mit einer Chiffer bezeichnet, während bei nachgedruckten Berichten die Quelle angegeben ist. Seit Erfindung der elektrischen Telegraphie sind in größeren Städten sogenannte Correspondenzbureaus entstanden, welche lithographirte Correspondenzen sofort nach Empfang durch den Telegraphen an ihre Abonnenten ausgeben.
