Fano, 1) Stadt am Adriatischen Meere in der päpstlichen Legation Urbino-Pesaro, hat Bischof, Kathedrale, 16 Kirchen, ein College mit den Rechten einer Universität, Mädchenerziehungsanstalt, Bibliothek, Theater, einen wohlerhaltenen, 30 Ellen hohen Triumphbogen des Augustus, restaurirt von Constantin u. Constanz, Hafen, Fischfang, Seidenweberei, Handel; 15,000 Ew. – F. ist das alte Fanum Fortunae; hierher schickte Augustus eine Colonie, weshalb ihm hier ein Triumphbogen gebaut wurde; seitdem hieß die Stadt Colonia Julia Fanestris. Bei F. 552 n. Chr. Sieg des Narses über Totilas. Später bemächtigten sich die Herzöge von Urbino F-s, u. nachdem es sich mehrere Male vergebens frei zu machen versucht hatte, unterwarf es sich dem Papste; vgl. Ammiani, Mem. istor. della cità di Fano, Fano 1751; 2) (Othonus), eine der zu Corfu gehörenden sieben Inseln u. NW. davon im Ionischen Meere, mit Leuchtthurm; 600 Ew.
