Godiva, Gemahlin eines Grafen Leofrik von Mercia; im 11. Jahrh. hatte ihr Gemahl der Stadt Coventry eine schwere Buße aufgelegt, G. that Fürsprache für die Bürger; jener sagte Erleichterung zu, wenn G. nackt durch die Stadt ritt; sie that es, nachdem der Magistrat bei Todesstrafe verboten hatte, sich auf der Straße od. an den Fenstern sehen zu lassen. Ein Bäcker ließ sich doch verleiten durch das Fenster zu lauschen, erblindete aber sogleich. Diese romantische Erzählung ist der Inhalt von A. Tennysons gleichnamigem Gedicht u. eines Lustspiels von Keefe. Zur Erinnerung wird noch jetzt jährlich ein Volksfest gefeiert, wobei ein Aufzug (Godivaprocession), in dem eine Dame in Tricot gekleidet durch die Stadt reitet u. eine Strohpuppe als Peeping Tom (lauschender Tom) aufgeführt wird.
