Das National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) ein US-amerikanisches Forschungszentrum für psychische Störungen und das weltweit größte Institut seiner Art. Es ist Teil der 27 National Institutes of Health (NIH), die wiederum eine Behörde des United States Department of Health and Human Services sind. Das Forschungszentrum befindet sich in Bethesda (Maryland).[1]
Aufgabe
Das NIMH sieht seine Aufgabe in der Erweiterung des Wissens von Ursachen und Behandlung psychischer Störungen durch Grundlagenforschung und klinischer Forschung. Besonderes Augenmerk liegen dabei auf folgenden Punkten:
- Entdeckung neuer Methoden zur Entschlüsselung von Ursachen psychischer Störungen
- Erforschung von Krankheitsverläufen zur Verbesserung der Interventionsmöglichkeiten
- Entwicklung neuer und besserer Interventionen
- Steigerung der öffentlichen Aufmerksamkeit für die eigenen Themengebiete
